Where does a Classic Mojito come from?

Considered Cuba’s oldest cocktail, the original Mojito may go as far back as Sir Francis Drake in the 1500’s.  Though, Drake was unsuccessful finding gold in Havana, he did find a cure for some of his ailing crew members.  Sir Drake was worried about the dysentery and scurvy that was ravaging his crew.  Consequently, he sent a small party to meet with local South Americans for a remedy.   Of course, they found one!

The remedy, however, may date back even further to African slaves that worked in the fields of sugar cane.  Slaves created “Aguardiente de cana” (literally “firewater of the sugar cane”) – a simple sugar cane alcohol.

Locals used a mixture of aguarediente de cana, mint leaves, sugar cane and fresh lime juice into a tonic which turned out to be effective for scurvy.  Importantly, the citrus was the cure for scurvy, and if the other ingredients had little effect- well they still tasted good!

The Bacardi company popularized Mojitos in the mid 1800s.  Additionally, Ernest Hemmingway’s endorsement of the drink in Le Bodeguita del Medio propelled it to become one of the most popular modern cocktails.

A perfect summer Cocktail?

Mojito cocktails are already perfect in every way, so what could possibly make them better? They’re made with Fresh strawberries! Strawberries are an excellent accompaniment to a mojito’s sweet, sour, minty flavor.

Besides being summer’s best cocktail, our Strawberry Mojitos are SKINNY.  A classic Mojito is heavy on Sugar- and usually over 200 calories- (Way too many calories for the Skinny Bitches we know and love)

What are tips for Making Cocktails for a Party?

  1. Simplify.   Rather than making multiple cocktails, chose a signature cocktail that will create a delicious experience for your guests.
  2. Make a batch mixture of your cocktail ahead of time and chill.  Your guests can immediately receive a cocktail at the perfect temperature.
  3. Prepare your cocktail glasses ahead of time.  Whether a Martini glass or cocktail glass, you can have your glasses chilled, and garnished.  Garnish with a lime wheel,  or rim the glass with graham cracker crumbs (as in this recipe), or a more creative flourish- prepare ahead
  4. Set up your Bar or Self-serve Beverage Station.  Just before the party you can pull out your ice bucket, your garnished glasses, and even pour a few cocktails for your first guests.  Remember to have a picture of water, and some non-alcoholic options such as sparkling water, juice or sodas.
  5. Be in the moment- Your friends want to see and enjoy you!  Afterall, it’s your party.

Plan on a small plate of wonderful,

without a side of guilt!

Before the Party

1. Pregame with nutritious, high-protein food before the party.  Don’t arrive hungry and face down a smorgasbord of sugary choices.

2. Get exercise in before the party.  At most parties you sit and stand for hours- your not burning calories on the couch (Well, If you are, you might want to clear the room!)

3. Drink water before, during and after the party!  Water helps you feel less hungry, and may also help to dilute any cocktails you enjoy.

Party time

4. If you feel like you want to imbibe, try simple, low-sugar cocktails like vodka and soda.  With just 133 calories in a 7.5-ounce cocktail, it’s one of the lowest calorie cocktails you can order- Make it a little bougie with lemon, lime, cucumber or mint!  In addition, low-calorie hard seltzers or Skinny cocktails can also be good choices.  Even better, alternate your cocktails with water.  Be aware that alcohol increases appetite, and can affect your ability to make good choices.  If you have recently lost weight, or it is especially warm- the alcohol can have a greater effect- Be careful of your alcohol intake, or you may really make some memories(for everyone else!)

5. Bring a low-calorie/high protein appetizer.  It will be a stand-out among the other bacon-wrapped, high carb  submissions at the party- AND you will be sure there is something on the table you feel good about eating.

6. Use small plates, make good choices, and don’t finish any food you don’t love. (Don’t feel obliged to finish)

7. Get your butt away from the food table!  Move around, eat slow, and stop eating early.

8. Focus on relationships, laughter, and activities that get people moving.  Or, kick off those shoes and dance like no one is looking!

9. Skip the dessert table, and finish the evening with a small portion of fruit, and/or a nice cup of tea

10. Leave the left-overs.  Don’t let your host load you up with high-calorie take-home baggies.
