The Sloppy Joe (or Ho in our version)
The Sloppy Joe is a very messy one, but a tasty one. Traditionally it consists of ground beef, onions, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce and any seasonings you desire to throw in. The sandwich gets its name because its fillings are deliberately sloppy and because it was allegedly first created by a chef from Iowa named Joe. There are lots of ways to vary up a Sloppy Joe to make it even more exciting (check out our Sloppy Ho slider with chorizo).

The Po’ Boy
This one is a Louisiana favorite. Originally created to feed the ‘poor boys’ who were on strike in New Orleans, the Po’ Boy certainly doesn’t taste like a poor man’s sandwich. It traditionally consists of seafood (usually fried shrimp or oysters), shredded lettuce, tomato, pickles and spicy remoulade sauce. Some people like to replace the seafood with pork. This sandwich is best served between two slices of crunchy French bread.

Only a Feckin Eejit would boil it!
The Grinder
Okay Cussers, we know where your mind just went. Get out of the gutter. Hailing from New England, the Grinder sandwich and gets its name from the thick bread and layers of fillings, which take a lot of ‘grinding’ to chew through. It’s a messy but satisfying sandwich that typically contains Italian meat cuts such as salami and capicola, provolone, lettuce, peppers, onions and a generous dollop of mayonnaise. Take this sandwich to the office and be the envy of your colleagues. Just be careful eating it over your desk and it creates a lot of crumbs!

The Chivito
We’re flying abroad for this next one. All the way to Uruguay! The Chivito is a favorite sandwich in this country that consists of thinly sliced beef, bacon, mozzarella cheese, mayonnaise, olives and a fried egg. This is all crammed into a soft bun. While the Chivito takes some time to prepare, it’s a rewarding sandwich that can be great for lunch or dinner. In fact, it’s often served as part of a meal with french fries and salad. Check out this Chivito Recipe for more detailed instructions on how to construct this super South American sandwich.
The Hot Brown
Back at home, Kentucky’s Brown hotel has provided the staple for watching the horses run, a classic hot brown. It featured thick-sliced roast turkey, crispy bacon, and Roma tomato slices, and covered in a cheesy Mornay sauce. Of course your classic Hot Brown is a little labor intensive so take a short cut and use our Hot Brown Cassarole.
Banh Mi
Next stop, Vietnam. The Banh Mi is a banging blend of Vietnamese and French flavors. It’s typically served on a crispy baguette and contains grilled meats (usually pork or chicken), pickled vegetables, fresh cilantro and a drizzle of spicy mayonnaise. If you’re looking for a sandwich with a zing, then this is definitely the one. Some people like to make it even more fiery by adding jalapenos to the mix. A vegetarian version of the Banh Mi can also be made by substituting meats for grilled tofu. .
The Dagwood
Named after the comic character Dagwood Bumstead, this sandwich takes inspiration from the sandwiches found in cartoons that typically pile as many fillings in to create a mighty tower. There are no strict rules as to what to put into a Dagwood. The more excessive the better. A popular combo of fillings includes thinly sliced meats, bacon, cheddar, lettuce, tomato and a fried egg or two. Because such a sandwich can easily fall apart, it’s worth supporting it with a skewer. A great sandwich for using up leftovers in your fridge.
Quickie Super Sides
The Elvis
The Elvis is a sandwich fit for a king. It’s an unusual concoction of sweet and savory fillings that you might otherwise never have considered putting together – peanut butter, bananas and bacon. As wacky as this might sound, it creates a perfect balance of flavors and textures. The creaminess of the peanut butter, the sweetness of the bananas and the crispiness of the bacon will leave your taste buds dancing. You can have it for lunch or breakfast. Thank you very much!
And don't forget the libations
