According to the Urban Dictionary- if something “Slaps A$$” – it is especially good.  That describes this Hot honey Mango slaw perfectly.

Do you find traditional Coleslaw recipes a little boring?  HEEEELL Yes

Our slaw gets its crunchy texture from the combination of carrot, purple and green cabbage.  The spice and character comes from delicious Hot honey, Jalapeno, Fresh cilantro, Scallions, and Fresh lime juice.  Lastly, Slaw is best with a boost of sweetness from the Mango.  This is a fusion that Slaps A$$.

This slaw slaps alongside grilled, broiled, baked or blackened fish.  Wonderful with or in Tacos .  Add some tangy zest to Fish Tacos, Shrimp Tacos – and of course beef or Pork tacos.

  • Thinly slice, shred or grate the green and purple cabbage or alternatively buy your cabbage/slaw pre-cut/pre-packaged.  Be sure it is fresh
  • We use one large Jalapeno in this recipe.  You may decide to use more or less, based on your tastes and how fiery hot your  jalapeño chili pepper is-  It is a great idea to sample the jalapeño pepper in your salad as you go

Where does Coleslaw come from?

Cabbage salads go all the way back to Ancient Roman times, where the people ate a dish of cabbage, vinegar, eggs, and spices.  The Dutch were also known for a salad called Koosla.  Kool meaning Cabbage, and Sla- meaning salad.  Coleslaw has evolved into may variations globally.

 

Is Coleslaw good for you?

Coleslaw is typically packed with fiber-rich vegetables and low-calorie cabbage.  The cabbage slaw dressing can be trouble.  Some recipes feature a dressing with mayonnaise and/or sugar.  Chose a recipe with a dressing that highlights the vegetable flavor without adding too many fats and sugars.

Materials

  • ½ cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 3 Tbsp hot honey Mikes or DatilPepper
  • ½ tsp celery seed
  • ½ cup fresh cilantro chopped
  • 2 limes - juiced
  • 2-3 large mangos ripe but still firm
  • 2 scallions finely diced
  • 1 large jalapeno finely diced
  • 1 carrot shredded
  • ½ head of green cabbage thinly sliced
  • ½ head of red cabbage thinly sliced
