FAQ’s on Holiday Cranberry sauce

Where are cranberries grown in the United States?

Cranberries are mostly grown in 5 states.  The top producer of cranberries is Wisconsin- producing almost half of the country’s berries.  Massachusetts’s is the next most successful state producing almost 1/3- followed by Oregon, New Jersey, and Washington. Fresh Cranberries are generally available between mid- September to mid November.  Growers harvest millions of pounds of cranberries when they reach their peak of color and flavor.

Are there health benefits to Cranberries?

A study found that of 20 common fruits, cranberries are the highest in phenols- a type of antioxidants.  Enjoy a superfood with high nutrient content, and plant compounds that help prevent stomach cancer, heart disease, and Urinary Tract infections.  Cranberries improve immune function and lower blood pressure

Why are cranberries traditionally associated with the Holidays in the US?

As one of the few originally natively grown fruits in the United States, the cranberry represents an American harvest on our Holiday table.  They were believed to be in abundance in the 1500s, and likely enjoyed by Native Americans and Pilgrims.

Can I use dried Cranberries in my homemade Cranberry sauce?

We don’t suggest using dried cranberries as a substitute for the fresh cranberries in a homemade holiday recipe. Unlike fresh fruit, dried cranberries are infused with a sugar solution before being dried and spayed with oil to keep them from sticking together in the bag.  They not have the texture you want, but they will also make your sauce too sweet.

Can I used canned cranberries in my homemade Cranberry sauce?

For best results, use fresh or frozen cranberries in a cranberry sauce recipe from scratch.  Canned berries contain sugar and sometimes gelatin, which will throw off your recipe, and may make your sauce exceedingly sweet.
