Where did the Sloppy Joe sandwich come from?

There’s more than one origin story of how the sloppy joe came to be. One story starts in Havana, Cuba  José García served a sandwich that was a new version of a Cuban dish called ropa vieja.

García’s floor was often wet from melted ice. This led some customers to tease García for having a “sloppy” restaurant. Eventually, the name “Sloppy Joe’s” stuck.  Besides its value of being a tangy and tasty sandwich- the Sloppy Joe was an excellent food to absorb the alcohol of day drinking. Years later, writer Ernest Hemingway recommended naming a new location in Key west Florida after the original Sloppy Joe’s.  That location still serves tens of thousands of the sandwiches every year.

Of course, there’s a second story of how the sloppy joe started. The sandwich may have begun as a variation of the loose meat sandwiches that were becoming popular as a budget-friendly meal. According to legend, a cook named Joe at Floyd Angell’s café in Sioux City, Iowa, added tomato sauce to his “loose meat” sandwiches. Some believe this is the origin of the well- known sloppy joe sandwich.

This sandwich became a nostalgic part of American food culture.  It also goes by other names in different parts of the U.S. Sloppy Janes (Central Minnesota), Dynamites (Northern Rhode Island), Tavern Sandwiches (Iowa), and Slushburgers (Upper Midwest and North Dakota)

Is Manwich sauce still sold?

Hunt’s (the ketchup maker) introduced Manwich in 1969. The tagline read “A sandwich is a sandwich, but a Manwich is a meal,”.  Beginner cooks could simply mix the canned sauce with browned meat and serve. The canned sauce is still popular today. In fact, Manwich is even on Twitter as a “Sloppy Joe enthusiast, mealtime solutionist.”

What is Chorizo?

We love to use fresh Mexican-style Chorizo sausage in my cooking. There are two varieties:

  • Fully cooked or semi-cured: the Spanish/European version

Pork cured meat originating from the Iberian Peninsula.  In Europe, chorizo is a fermented, cured, smoked meat, which can be sliced and eaten without cooking. Often added as an ingredient to a variety of dishes

  • Raw and fresh: the Mexican version

Mexican Chorizo is a fatty, spicy sausage typically made from ground pork.  It is usually seasoned with Ancho and/ or Guajillo Chili peppers, Paprika, Cumin, Oregano, Garlic, Cinnamon, Clove, and Salt.  It has a wonderful zing and is a great way to add flavor to recipes.

Spicy Chorizo dates back to the Spanish Conquests.  Toluca, in central Mexico, was one of the first places to register Chorizo production, and to this day Mexico considers Toluca Chorizo to be one of the finest in the country.

Of course, fresh Chorizo from your local grocer will be delicious in this recipe

Aphrodesi-‘hacks’ for the Chorizo Slider:

  • The spices of Good Chorizo gives this recipe gravitas- I often purchase fresh Chorizo from the meat counter of Fresh Market or Sprouts.  You may find dried Chorizo While it may be good on a charcuterie tray, I do not recommend it for this recipe
  • The Melty cheese, pineapple and toasted Hawaiian slider buns are a great finish to this flavorful slider.  If you would like to reduce the spice, you can use American cheese.
  • Fresh Chorizo is cooked in a skillet and allowed to simmer at medium heat. This may render grease.  Let the Chorizo drain on paper towels to absorb any excess grease/ fat before adding sauce, or putting on top of a slider bun.
  • You can make the meat mixture ahead of time and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator until you are close to serving time.  Warm the Chorizo mixture right before serving
  • The Sloppy Ho is an great recipe- A delicious party food, fun for a weeknight dinner, and perfect for Game day

Mix It Up:

You can substitute the crushed pineapple for Mango or Peach Chutney- also Extremely Delicious

You can switch up your cheese – tangy Monterey Jack, American Cheese or shredded Cheddar cheese can be substituted – Feel free to use your favorite.  The melted cheese on the spicy Chorizo is a mouth-watering combination.

Forget the burger, and get sloppy with a juicy chorizo slider!

FAQs for Chorizo Sloppy Joe

Why would I want to use Chorizo in a Sloppy Joe?

Chorizo Sloppys are so much more interesting than a hamburger, or Sloppy Joe made from ground beef or ground turkey.  The sausage texture and spice create a delicious sandwich or mini slider

Is Chorizo sausage greasier than ground beef?

Chorizo sausage typically contains more fat.  It will break apart similar to ground meat and produce grease.  Consistently stir the Chorizo until it is fully cooked, and drain any excess fat at the end of the cooking process.

How do I keep the bun from getting soggy?

Assemble your sandwich right before serving.  Another tip is to toast the bottom and top bun before assembling your sandwich.

What toppings taste good on a Chorizo Sloppy Joe?

Popular toppings include pineapple, and cheese like Pepper Jack, American, or Provolone.  Onions and jalapeño , salt and pepper are also added for extra flavor.
