Beer Cheese FAQs

What is Beer Cheese made of?

Start by making a Roux in a medium saucepan on the stovetop at medium-low heat.  The roux is your melted butter, flour, onion and fresh garlic or garlic powder.  Stir and cook for 1 minute.  Slowly stir in milk, and then beer ale or hoppy IPA – whisking constantly.  Add Worcestershire sauce, and keep whisking until thick and bubbly.   Reduce the heat to low and add pre-shredded cheese a handful at a time. Stir until melted and smooth.  Transfer the dip to a small crockpot for keeping the cheese warm and cozy.  Delicious with crackers or homemade soft pretzels.  So rewarding to make a beer cheese dip for a gathering.

Why add Beer to Cheese Dip?

Adding beer to your cheese dip can give it a unique and delicious beer flavor. The type of beer you use can also impact the taste, so choose one that complements the cheese.  You will love this beer cheese recipe.

What is a Roux?

A roux is a mixture of equal parts flour and fat, cooked together over low to medium heat.  This creates a uniform thickening agent for sauces.  Importantly, roux makes our beer cheese dip recipe the one that you’ll love.  It’s thick and delicious.

What Kind of Beer makes the best Cheese dip?

  • Darker Beers like stouts, lagers, and malts will produce deep and slightly biting flavor.
  • Lighter Beers like ales and IPA’s will give a lighter kind of flavor
  • Non-Alcoholic beers can also be used
