Where does Pita Bread come from?

Pita bread comes from the Middle East.  The Pita is a round, leavened double-layered flat bread. It is made with flour, water, baker’s yeast, and salt.  Pita literally means ‘flatbread’.  Nearly every civilization from 4000 years ago had some sort of bread.  Flatbreads and Pita breads were surely some of the earliest examples.  Though the origin is somewhat murky, it is believed that Pita bread may have originated with the Bedouin people.  The Bedouins traded Pita for essential goods, and spread this tradition bread around the world.

Today Pita is used for ‘pocket’ sandwiches, and  As a snack, pita is great with baba ghanoush, hummus, or tabbouleh.  We also love warm toasty pita chips- and they are fantastic with Cuss Kitchen Skinny Dips
